Privacy Policy

Viewy ("we", "us") lets you rate, rank, and discover movies and TV shows and follow other people doing the same. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.

Information you provide

When you create an account we collect your email address and the profile details you choose to add: username/handle, display name, bio, profile photo, and (optionally) gender, date of birth, and phone number. Your date of birth is used only to confirm you meet our minimum age and to set an appropriate content rating. Your phone number is optional and, if you provide it, is used only to help people you know find you on Viewy; you can remove it at any time in Settings.

Contacts (finding friends)

Finding friends from your contacts is optional and always starts with you tapping it. If you allow access, Viewy reads the phone numbers in your address book, converts them to a standard format, and sends only those numbers to our server to check which ones belong to existing Viewy accounts. Names, email addresses, and everything else in your contacts stay on your device. We do not store your contacts or the numbers we check: they are used for that one lookup and discarded. We return only the public profile details (username, display name, profile photo) of accounts that matched, never anyone's phone number. You can turn contacts access off at any time in your device settings, and you can remove your own phone number in Settings so you are not discoverable this way.

Information from your use of Viewy

We store the activity you create in the app: titles you log or rate, your rankings and head-to-head picks, your watchlist, reviews and comments, recommendations you send, who you follow, and who you block or report. This is what powers your profile, your rankings, and the social feed. If you send us feedback through the in-app feedback form, we also store that message along with basic app details (app version and the screen you were on) so we can act on it.

In-app analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the app is used, so we can see where people get stuck and which features matter. This includes events like screens viewed, ratings and rankings made, and features used, along with your user ID, username, app version, and OS version. It does not include your email address, your contacts, the text of your reviews, or your precise location. We use this only to improve Viewy: no advertising, no selling of data, and no tracking across other companies' apps or websites.

Website analytics

Our website (viewyapp.com) uses PostHog to count visits and see which pages people read, so we know what to improve. This covers the website only, not the app. It records things like the pages you view, the referring link, and general device and browser information, and it sets a cookie or similar identifier to recognise return visits. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell this data, and we do not combine it with your Viewy account. You can opt out with your browser's "Do Not Track" or global privacy control signal, or by blocking analytics cookies.

Technical & diagnostic data

If a crash or error occurs we collect diagnostic information (device model, OS version, and a technical stack trace) through our error-reporting provider so we can fix problems. We do not use this to build advertising profiles.

How we use your information

To provide the core features (ratings, rankings, discovery, and social), to operate and secure the service, to respond to reports of abuse, and to communicate with you about your account. We do not sell your personal information.

Third-party services

We use Supabase to host your account and data, The Movie Database (TMDB) to supply film/TV metadata and images, JustWatch (via TMDB) for streaming-availability data, an error-reporting provider for crash diagnostics, and PostHog for in-app and website analytics. Movie and TV information shown in the app comes from these sources, not from you. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

Affiliate links

Some outbound links (for example "Buy tickets") may be affiliate links, meaning we could earn a commission if you make a purchase. This never changes the price you pay.

Your choices and rights

You can edit your profile and privacy (public/private account) at any time in Settings. You can wipe your stored activity ("Wipe stored data") or permanently delete your entire account and all associated data ("Delete account") from Settings. Deleting your account is irreversible.

Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, activity, social graph, and content are removed from our live database. Reports you have filed may be retained in de-identified form for safety and abuse-prevention purposes.

Children

Viewy is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age.

Changes

We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
